Worbla Techniques for the Puppet Maker (Level 1) with Chicago Puppet Studio
Chicago Puppet Studio artists take participants through a three day process in the use of Worbla, a unique and versatile thermoplastic that has incredible uses for puppet artists and puppet makers.
Students will:
- Create their own puppet head in plasticine clay
- Make a negative mold of that head using a simple, tried-and-true papier-mâché process
- Cast a lightweight Worbla head that can be painted, modified and prepared for performance.
- Learn specific use of modeling techniques, heat gun, heat knife and possibly hot water bath in working with Worbla.

Workshop fee includes:
—1 block of plasticine clay (oil clay) for head sculpture
—Sufficient Worbla to cast the head
—Use of studio tools and materials
—Interaction/feedback with our skilled puppet artisans
Previous experience working with sculptural materials like paper mache and clay is a plus. Students should be prepared to work with their hands.
Note:
Early registration for this workshop is encouraged. 2-4 weeks in advance of the workshops, students will pick up their plasticine block from the Fine Arts Building and begin work at home on their head sculptures.
